For animals all around the world, their first year is one of the most difficult, and most dangerous. To survive, they must overcome daily threats and challenges from rivals, the elements and predators.
In this series, three wildlife camera operators follow our planet's most iconic animals as they grow and develop, day by day. This is the story of what it takes to survive in the wild. This is their first year on earth.
During the Netherlands War of Independence, the Prince of Courtray lays siege to the castle of the Duke of Brabant, and the duke and his daughter are made prisoners in their own castle. The prince, to commemorate his victory takes the precious standard of the Brabant House, which he wrests forcibly from the hands of the daughter and tramples it under foot, and carries it to his own quarters and triumphantly sets it up at the foot of his bed, subsequently joining his officers at a banquet in celebration of their success. Under cover of night, the daughter creeps past the sentries, enters the conqueror's apartment, and wrapping the standard around her, glides back to her father and presents it to him. The prince discovers his loss, but before he can recover the standard, the soldiers of the Duke of Flanders arrive, and taking the prince's troops by surprise, force their way into the castle, completely routing the usurpers.
